1999 St. Louis Rams Championship Ring

Rams 1999 Championship Ring (NFL)

Super Bowl XXXIV Logo

Each of the 200 rings produced for the Rams, more than 100 of which went to coaches and other non-playing personnel (including 24 smaller sizes for female staff members), is valued at $12,500. "They're made to be trophies for your hands," [Rams TE] Ernie Conwell says. "It's something that you want people to notice when you wear it. You want somebody across the room to say, 'What in the world does that guy have on his hand over there?'"

What in the world, indeed. Each ring contains 157 diamonds, for a total approximate weight of 2.75 carats, encrusted on a combination of 10-karat and 18-karat yellow gold, weighing about 2.25 ounces.

Or, as defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina put it: "It's like wearing a car on your finger."

The ring's face features a diamond-dotted team logo and an image of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, highlighted with a .4-karat marquis diamond and tapered baguette diamonds. One side includes a Super Bowl XXXIV logo and a second images of teh Lombardi Trophy. The other side is personalized with the recipient's name and position alongside images of the Gateway Arch and the Rams' helmet.

The rings were designed by [Rams owner Georgia] Frontiere, in conjunction with Lordo's Diamonds of St. Louis and Josten's, the Minneapolis-based manufacturer of sports rings. According to Josten's, each ring required nearly eight hours of production time and underwent a six-step process in which 13 different inspections were conducted to assure quality and uniformity.

For all the glitter and meaning, though, few players wear them unless they are making a public appearance. "I mean, it is a great honor to win the Super Bowl, but when I look at it, it's just so danged big, man," Zgonina says. "You go out to the store or something, and everybody wants to know what it is and to talk about it. That's too much attention for me!"
